Via ferrata du Vidourle
The Vidourle Via Ferrata is located on the border between Gard and Hérault. The Vidourle River marks the boundary between the two departments. Here is the Roque de Saint-Sériès.
Vidourle Via Ferrata, an immersion in nature
The meeting point is on the banks of the Vidourle, past the Via Ferrata sign, on a large lawn with a picnic table by the Vidourle.
The cliff overlooks the Vidourle, which marks the boundary between the two departments. It is a coastal river originating in the southern Cévennes, above the village of Saint-Hyppolyte-du-Fort. 95 km long, it flows into the Mediterranean Sea at Grau-du-Roi. It is known for overflowing during Cevennes episodes in autumn.
The setting of the Vidourle via ferrata is idyllic, the rock face forms an arch above the water with multiple rock colors (orange, blue, black flows). It is a popular spot for birds, with many species stopping here during migration (various tits, the blue-eyed jackdaw, the eagle owl, the kestrel, the dipper, the heron, the warbler, the jay, the oriole, the roller, the kingfisher…). We also offer walks with an ornithologist partner.
The Saint-Sériès via ferrata: Two routes for more thrills
This is a relatively short via ferrata in distance but can prove challenging depending on the route chosen. Indeed, after a common start just a few meters from the water, you will have two route options depending on your overall fitness. A first section via a 25 m zipline allows you to reach a beautiful 20 m vertical wall. On this fairly easy section, if you’re up for it, you can maximize the use of natural rock holds, the goal being to make it like pure climbing. It’s quite engaging and very fun for testing your first climbing sensations. Of course, the rungs and lifeline in place will always be there to facilitate passages and allow you to progress safely.
The overhanging physical section
For the more daring or for those wanting to take on a small challenge, the overhanging section marked in black is sensational.
This physical section is located right in the middle of the recess of the Vidourle rock face just above the water. It is impressive when viewed from below. If you let your feet off the rungs, your body will be completely suspended in the air. It will then be held only by the strength of your hands. To complete this section properly, you need to use the right body technique. First, you need to maintain rhythm and be efficient when changing carabiners on the cable that secures your lifeline.
The method
The right way to cross the overhang without tiring too much is to keep your feet as close to the cliff as possible. Remember to coordinate the push of your legs and the rise of your arms. This requires a minimum of core strength to keep your hips close to the wall to avoid being pulled by gravity, an inevitable phenomenon. Once this overhanging section is completed, you will have about fifteen meters of slightly overhanging vertical wall remaining, requiring concentration and energy to the end. Once up there, you can catch your breath again while contemplating the view of the Vidourle River. A magical moment where you can admire the surrounding wildlife and nature. Several bird species are present on this colorful limestone outcrop above the water.
See you at the top!
To finish in style, common to both routes, a superb monkey bridge awaits you for the final aerial sensations. If you pay attention, you can read the following inscription: “No matter where the path goes, enjoy the ride”, which everyone can interpret according to their own feelings. Having grown up in the area, this phrase has accompanied me many times in my life. It’s always a pleasure to read it again each time I guide this wonderful via ferrata.

Description
There are two possible itineraries for this via-ferrata: an easy one and a difficult one with a passage over an overhang. The difficult section can be avoided by a zip line. The two paths meet at the top in a cave with a bird’s-eye view of the colorful Vidourle river. This grotto is ideal for a souvenir photo!
At the end of the route, at the very top, there’s an aerial passage on a monkey bridge just waiting for you to go back and forth, hang pigs and enjoy the panoramic view. An orientation table at the top of the Virdoule via-ferrata lets you know a little more about the surrounding landscape, where you can see the start of the Cévennes mountain range.
The return journey is on foot, and in 15 minutes you’ll be back at your car. The more courageous can take a refreshing dip in the Vidourle.
It’s a compendium of everything you’d expect to find in a well-equipped via-ferrata.
Via-ferrata du Rocher de Sion: in the magnificent setting of the Thaurac, at the foot of the village of Saint-Bauzille-de-Putois.
