Roc de Tras Castel: the pillar ridge!
Roc de Tras Castel is another gem of the region that climbers love to visit. Climbing in Saint-Jean-de-Buèges is varied since you can find both 80-90m multi-pitch routes and beautiful single-pitch sport climbing routes.
The village is named after the river that flows through it: the Buèges.
It’s a historic, medieval site: dominating the village, the Château de Baulx was restored after 1991. You can admire it on this outing. Behind the castle, its guardian, the Tras Castel rock, is a huge playground.

Description
Three faces are available for climbing in Saint-Jean-de-Buèges:
- The West Pillar historically holds the first route openings equipped from the bottom. It is renowned for its six 80m routes. It is a demanding and wide climb; the bolts are spaced out, and the required level is mandatory to clear certain difficult moves. Naturéo’s favorite: the sustained “clochards célestes” (6a+ max).
- The West and South pillars will be our “training” cliff for multi-pitch climbing. It allows a 5b-level climber to experience their first sensations. We will teach you how to set up anchors, belaying, and how to rappel down with an auto-block (Prusik/Machard). Naturéo’s favorite: “le coup de grisou” (6a max).
- The South face, exposed to the sun, is a perfect spot for winter climbing. It features 3 sectors of varying difficulty, with routes ranging from 1m to 40m. Naturéo’s favorite: “a tout cœur” 6a+ (40m).
Climbing in Saint-Jean-de-Buèges is therefore the place where we can introduce you to sport climbing, both single-pitch and long routes.
Hortus means “garden” in Latin. This major site for climbing in the Hérault is a rare gem.
Long route climbing is reserved for people who already have some climbing and belaying experience.
