Tapoul Canyon
Close to Mont Aigoual and its observatory, 1h50 from Montpellier, the Tapoul canyon is one of the most renowned canyons in the region and the Cévennes. This Cévenol canyon is a condensed version of everything fun and playful that canyoning has to offer.
Sporty canyoning in the Cévennes
Experiencing the Tapoul Canyon in the Cévennes offers you a real breath of fresh air: as you climb the D269 road leading to Mont Aigoual, you’ll begin to appreciate the pure mountain air. The departure is from the village of Rousse via a shuttle (10 min, €3.50) that runs back and forth all day. It takes 1h45 from Montpellier. The temperature difference between the coast and Mont Aigoual is striking—it’s a delight in summer to be up there.
Canyoning in the Cévennes takes place on granite rock, creating a very different atmosphere from limestone-type canyons. During the descent of the Tapoul Gorges, you’ll find a condensed version of all the challenges and fun features found in canyoning.
You can learn and improve your rappelling skills, make jumps up to 10m (not mandatory). Midway through the course, you’ll have a big surprise with a “splash” zip line that releases you into the water. You can also simply enjoy this geological marvel that the Tapoul gorges represent.
The Tapoul canyon is open in spring and throughout the summer, until the end of August.
